Sierra Leone wants to ensure sustainable management of its marine ecosystems and resources

Sierra Leone'smarine space brings great benefit to its people

14%

of population (1M) is directly or indirectly employed in the fishing sector

12%

of GDP contribution from fishing

110-140M

metric tonnes of carbon stock within mangrove forests

80%

of animal protein intake is from seafood, or ~6x the global average with per capita fish consumption of 22.6 kg per year – a major contributor to the Feed-Salone initiative

The long-term health of the country’s marine ecosystems however needs attention

<2%

of Sierra Leone’s Economic Exclusive Zone is classified as Marine Protected Areas

~40%

of fish stocks across West Africa are over-exploited

~1%

of mangrove forests are lost annually

~10 kt

of plastic waste ends up in the oceans each year

Sierra Leone wants to ensure sustainable management of its marine ecosystems and resources

Artisanal fishing
  • Strengthen Community Management Associations (CMAs) to enable local management of marine areas to manage long-term fish sustainability
  • Transition to Territorial Use Rights for Fishing (TURFs) granting communities exclusive rights to fish in and manage their local area
  • Invest in select landing sites with cooling technology to reduce post harvest loss
  • Support the adoption of new fishing gear to avoid damage to ecosystem and by catch
  • Improve community livelihoods through alternative income models
Industrial fishing
  • Improve IUU fishing surveillance through technology such as vessel monitoring systems (VMS) and satellite tracking
  • Conduct periodic fish stock health assessments to create transparency on fish stock sustainability
  • Introduce dynamic fishing restrictions informed by fish stock health data (e.g., seasonal bans, gear restrictions, etc.)
  • Improve regional collaboration
Sensitive marine ecosystems
  • Protect sensitive marine eco-systems, including ~80% of mangrove forests (~120-160 kha) in collaboration with local communities
  • Restore around ~5-6 kha of degraded mangrove forests
  • Support alternative livelihood programs that help sustain marine ecosystems such as oyster farming and alternative fish preservation methods
